I sostantivi search e research possono essere tradotti entrambi con “ricerca”, ma hanno sfumature di significato diverse. Search indica una ricerca messa in atto per trovare qualcuno o qualcosa: search engine, motore di ricerca; The search party is looking for the missing girl in the forest, la spedizione di ricerca sta cercando la ragazza scomparsa nella foresta. Il sostantivo research, invece, di solito non numerabile, indica una ricerca di studio o un'investigazione approfondita e viene spesso usato con il verbo to do: We did some research on mammals, abbiamo fatto una ricerca sui mammiferi (non We made a research on mammals). Quando è usato come verbo, to research è seguito direttamente dall'oggetto o dalla preposizione into + oggetto: I am researching (into) this subject, sto conducendo una ricerca su questo argomento.
